The Big Dig: HMDA’s ₹5,106 Crore Corridor Project Goes Underground

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved the construction of a 600-metre, six-lane underpass beneath Begumpet Airport as part of a proposed elevated corridor project.

The development was confirmed by an official from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). The underpass forms a crucial component of the 5.4-km elevated corridor connecting Paradise Junction to Military Dairy Farm Road, passing through key areas such as Secunderabad, Tadbund, and Bowenpally. It addresses design constraints near the airport runway and helps avoid a sharp turn at Tadbund, clearing a major obstacle for the project.

The construction will require land acquisition from approximately 42 acres of defence land and 13 acres of private land. Meanwhile, HMDA is also executing two other elevated corridors—Paradise Junction to Shamirpet and Paradise Junction to Dairy Farm Road.

The project, estimated at ₹5,106 crore, is being funded by the New Development Bank, with additional support from the state government. The initiative is expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost infrastructure development across Hyderabad.
